Solid Wall Insulation Explained…

Applying insulation to the internal walls in your home reduces heat loss and improves its overall thermal efficiency. Solid walls can be insulated internally by applying rigid insulation boards to your existing wall, or by building a stud wall in which insulation materials, such as sheep wool, can be inserted. If you’re unsure on which option will be best suited to you, our team can advise you.
Insulation boards, sometimes referred to as loft boards, are a rigid material made of plasterboard, backed with insulation material such as foamed plastic, and are manufactured in sheets that provide extra insulation in your home. For walls that are flat and in good condition, this a quick and effective insulation solution. Insulation boards can be glued directly to the wall with an adhesive or attached with screws if necessary. Another option is to fix battens on to the wall to provide an even fixing for your insulation. This method is more common, and the best option when the existing wall is uneven.
Stud walls are essentially a timber frame with plasterboard nailed across the top. Once this has been constructed, the insulation material can be inserted into the gaps between the new stud frame and the existing wall. The new wall can then be plastered and decorated or, alternatively, this can first be covered with rigid insulation boards, improving thermal performance even further. However, it is important to keep in mind that the addition of these boards on top of a stud wall will reduce the size of your room.
You need to be sure that this is the most appropriate insulation solution for your home as the installation of internal wall insulation can be a disruptive process, involving the removal and refixing of your radiators, switches, and internal units.

Is internal wall Insulation worth it?

This really depends on the type of home you have. Older and larger properties will potentially benefit the most from solid wall insulation as they are already more predisposed to heat loss. Internal walls will be easier to access in larger properties and the reduction in room size will likely go unnoticed.
Many home owners have issues with heat loss through their walls or condensation. Internal wall insulation is an effective solution for these issues. There are several benefits or internal wall insulation, and these consist of:

  • Significantly reduce heat loss
  • Improve the thermal efficiency of your home
  • Greatly reduce your energy bills
  • Does not impact the exterior of your property
  • Get the work funded

The Installation
Process

Versatility

Dependent on your property type, you have two options of internal wall insulation to choose from and we can help to advise you on the best solution for your home.
If keeping your walls as thin as possible is a priority for you then insulation boards can be fitted. Made of plasterboard and backed with foamed plastic, these are usually only 6-10cm in thickness.
Alternatively, if your existing wall is uneven, it is possible to construct a stud wall in front of it by installing a timber stud frame and inserting either sheep wool or mineral wool fibre inside and then plastering/decorating over the top.

Assessment & Consultation

Assessing the condition of the wall surface is a key component in understanding which installation will be best suited to your home. It will also determine what preparation work, if any, is required. When we visit your property, we need to establish:

  • If your wall will require battens to provide a flat surface
  • Whether an adhesive can be used to fix your insulation to the wall
  • If mechanical fixings will be required

Installation

Internal solid wall insulation can be a disruptive process. As your existing wall fittings will need be completely removed and refixed. This will include:

  • Sockets
  • Radiators
  • Switches
  • Fitted furniture

It’s practical to overlap any insulation work with other major projects you may want to conduct in your home such as an extension or kitchen remodel.

Achieving Net Zero

Our goal is to support the UK Government in achieving its target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and one of the ways we can do so, is by installing the appropriate insulation within your home. Most of the energy used within homes is required for room heating, by installing solid wall insultation, we will decrease the amount of fuel required to heat your property, reducing your overall carbon footprint as less heat can be lost through your walls. So, you can guarantee that all work we conduct will provide you with the best thermal performance available.
